Humble‘s roots stretch back to the 19th century, when timber and the railroad helped establish the community as a regional trading center. Its history changed dramatically after oil was discovered in the early 1900s. By 1905, the Humble oil field had become the largest producing oil field in Texas, and local entrepreneurs later formed the Humble Oil and Refining Company, a predecessor of today’s ExxonMobil.

The city incorporated in 1933, but another major period of growth followed the opening of Houston Intercontinental Airport in 1969 and the development of surrounding communities including Kingwood and Atascocita. Those changes helped transform Humble into the commercial and retail hub it is today.

Humble occupies only about 10 square miles, but its economic footprint is considerably larger. City materials note that the population swells dramatically during the day as workers, shoppers and visitors arrive from throughout Northeast Harris County. Its position along I-69/US 59, just north of Beltway 8 and near George Bush Intercontinental Airport, gives the city direct access to one of the Houston region’s busiest transportation networks.

That location continues to support retail, restaurants, healthcare and employment growth, while larger projects are also adding to Humble’s economic base. The city has used economic-development agreements to support new investment, including a United Airlines project involving approximately 509,600 square feet of leased space and about $38 million in planned investment.
