Briercliff Park in Denton is in line for a $4.1 million makeover, with a new splash pad and playground replacement planned at 3200 State School Road. The improvements also include trails, utilities, landscaping and a new building.
State project registration TABS2027001067 lists an estimated construction cost of $4,123,620. Its planned construction window runs from September 24, 2026, through December 30, 2027. The filing covers renovations and additions to the existing park.
Briercliff Park plans shaded water play and a new playground
The City of Denton’s project page fills in the details families will notice most: a new spray park with shade, a replacement playground with shade, restrooms, expanded parking and a complete loop trail.
Together, those changes add more ways to spend an afternoon at the neighborhood park. Children get a new place to cool off, while the trail improvements give walkers a complete circuit. Shade and restrooms support longer visits.
Briercliff Park already spans 9.62 acres. Its existing amenities include a basketball court, soccer fields, a pavilion, playground equipment and about 0.27 mile of concrete walking trails. The project builds on that established recreation space.
A $750,000 state grant supports Briercliff Park
The project received a funding boost in January 2024, when the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission awarded Denton a $750,000 grant for Briercliff Park.
The state announcement identified a recirculating splash pad with shade, playground equipment and surfacing, a prefabricated restroom, and trail and parking improvements. Utilities were also part of the grant-supported scope. The grant contributes to the park project; it does not cover the full construction estimate in the new filing.
Community planning shaped the Briercliff Park improvements
Residents had an opportunity to review proposed designs at a virtual community meeting in September 2022. The following month, Denton’s parks board reviewed the concept and called for more trees, consideration of another pavilion and continued community outreach. Those comments were planning input, not a guarantee that every suggestion would become part of construction.
City Council unanimously approved the master plan in January 2023. McAdams, the project’s design firm, describes a planning process that combined community input with designs for expanded trails, parking, water play and restrooms.
Construction timing points to 2027
Denton’s public project page tentatively targets fall 2027 for completion. The newer state registration lists December 30, 2027. These are planning and construction estimates, and neither source establishes a confirmed splash-pad opening date.
The state filing reports 295,000 square feet for the project scope, which includes outdoor site work. For park visitors, the main change is the mix of new water play, a refreshed playground and better connections across Briercliff Park.
