Boerne is preparing to make a major investment in emergency services, but the city’s new fire station is being designed to do considerably more than house firefighters and fire trucks.
Boerne Fire Station No. 2 is planned along Esperanza Boulevard, just off Highway 46, where the new facility will expand the city’s emergency response capabilities on the eastern side of its service area.
According to newly filed construction records, the project has grown into a 22,057-square-foot facility with an estimated construction cost of $22.57 million.
Construction is currently scheduled to begin in October 2026, with completion targeted for August 2027. The project has reached Review Complete status, and Hoefer Welker is listed as the design firm.
But Boerne isn’t building an ordinary fire station.
Fire Station No. 2 will serve the community, too
Plans call for a one-story fire station with a mezzanine training tower, giving firefighters dedicated space for training alongside the station’s regular emergency-response operations.
The public side of the building is where things get particularly interesting.
The City of Boerne says the facility will include a community meeting room that can double as firefighter training space and a backup emergency operations center. Plans also incorporate library services and a small museum dedicated to preserving the history of both Boerne and its fire department.
The city also plans to incorporate sustainable design practices connected to its One Water initiatives.
Together, those features turn the project into something closer to a multifunctional public-safety and community facility than a traditional neighborhood firehouse.
Boerne’s growth is driving the need for another station
The location isn’t accidental.
Fire Station No. 2 is being built specifically to strengthen coverage in the eastern portion of the Boerne Fire Department’s service area, where continued residential and commercial growth has increased demand for city services.
Planning for the station has been underway for years.
In 2024, Boerne City Council selected Hoefer Welker to begin design work under a $1.36 million agreement. At the time, the city anticipated a much earlier completion, demonstrating how significantly the project’s timeline and scope have evolved during the planning process.
City Council approved another $847,500 for additional design services in April 2026 as work on the expanded project continued.
Now, the latest state construction filing gives the clearest look yet at the size of the station that Boerne ultimately plans to build.
Esperanza helped make the project possible
There’s also a direct connection between the new station and one of Boerne’s major residential developments.
The Lookout Group, developer of Esperanza, dedicated land for Fire Station No. 2 and is also expected to help fund a new fire apparatus for the station.
That puts new emergency infrastructure directly into an area experiencing substantial growth.
And the city has been preparing for the station beyond simply designing a building. Boerne previously said it had been increasing firefighter staffing and had ordered a new pumper truck in preparation for eventually operating the second station.
The museum will preserve more than 120 years of history
Perhaps the most unusual piece of Fire Station No. 2 will be its museum.
And Boerne certainly has some history to put inside it.
The community organized a permanent firefighting company in 1903, when local residents purchased equipment that included fire buckets, a hook-and-ladder wagon and a horse-drawn fire engine manufactured by the Howe Engine Company.
More than 120 years later, that horse-drawn Howe engine remains in working order and in the department’s possession, along with its historic hook-and-ladder wagon.
Boerne’s firefighters have come a long way from buckets and horse-drawn equipment.
Now the city is preparing for a modern station with dedicated training facilities, community space, emergency operations capabilities and room to preserve the history that came before it.
When will Boerne Fire Station No. 2 open?
The latest construction filing calls for work to begin in October 2026 and reach completion by August 31, 2027.
Those dates represent the current construction schedule rather than a guaranteed opening date, and this project has already evolved considerably during the planning process.
There’s also a distinction worth making when it comes to cost.
The $22.57 million figure in the TDLR filing covers the construction project reported to the state. More broadly, Boerne has discussed an overall project price approaching $30 million when design, site and infrastructure work, fire apparatus and equipment, furnishings and contingency are included.
Either way, this is one of Boerne’s more substantial public infrastructure investments.
Bottom line — Boerne isn’t simply adding another place to park a fire truck. Fire Station No. 2 will expand emergency response into the city’s growing eastern side while combining firefighter training, emergency operations, community space and more than a century of local fire department history under one roof.
