A long-awaited Target planned for the Dripping Springs area is taking another major step toward construction.
A new state filing details the actual 143,695-square-foot Target building planned at 13786 W. US 290, within The Village at Dripping Springs development. The ground-up store carries an estimated construction cost of $19.3 million and has already reached Review Complete status with the state.
Construction is currently scheduled to begin Feb. 5, 2027, with completion listed for Jan. 31, 2028.
The Target itself isn’t a surprise. The retailer confirmed earlier this year that it was headed to the Dripping Springs area.
What’s new is just how substantial the project is becoming.
New Filing Reveals the Target Building
Earlier plans for the project included a separate state filing covering approximately 147,000 square feet of site improvements associated with Target at The Village at Dripping Springs.
That project carried a $7.5 million estimate, but its scope specifically covered site improvements only and no architecture.
The latest filing is different.
It calls for construction of a new commercial building totaling 143,695 square feet and carries the much larger $19.3 million estimate.
The two filings shouldn’t simply be added together as a total project cost because construction estimates can overlap. However, the newest filing provides a much clearer picture of the investment going into the Target building itself.
And at nearly 144,000 square feet, this won’t be a small-format Target.
Target Will Anchor The Village at Dripping Springs
The store is planned as the major anchor for The Village at Dripping Springs, a new commercial development along the rapidly growing US 290 corridor.
Target confirmed its plans for the Dripping Springs community in early 2026. The company later purchased approximately 10.5 acres within the development for the new store.
Another state construction filing for The Village provides an interesting detail about the project’s structure: the development includes two separate landowners — The Village at Dripping Springs and Target.
That means Target isn’t merely another tenant occupying space in the center.
It’s a major piece of the development itself.
More Retail Could Follow Target
The Village isn’t being designed around Target alone.
Current leasing information shows additional retail buildings and commercial pad sites planned around the anchor store.
Two proposed retail buildings contain approximately 7,875 square feet and 11,400 square feet, while additional pad sites along US 290 are being marketed for future development.
No additional tenants should be considered confirmed simply because space appears on a leasing plan.
Still, the available sites mean Target could eventually become the centerpiece of a considerably larger collection of restaurants, shops and services.
That’s something worth watching as construction progresses.
Why Dripping Springs Is Getting Target’s Attention
The location also reflects the continued commercial expansion of the US 290 corridor east of Dripping Springs.
Marketing materials for The Village point to the area’s growing residential population and cite traffic counts exceeding 32,000 vehicles per day along US 290.
Until now, residents in the Dripping Springs area haven’t had a Target particularly close to home. When the project first surfaced, nearby Target stores were reported to be roughly 15 miles away in surrounding parts of the Austin metro.
The new store will bring one of the country’s largest retailers directly into the Dripping Springs-area growth corridor.
There’s one geographic wrinkle worth noting: the property’s mailing address is listed as Austin, TX 78737, while the development is marketed as The Village at Dripping Springs and Target has identified the project with the Dripping Springs community.
For that reason, the project is best described as serving the Dripping Springs area rather than assuming the property sits within Dripping Springs city limits.
Construction Could Continue Into 2028
Target hasn’t announced a grand-opening date for the new store.
However, the latest filing finally gives residents a clearer look at the construction schedule.
Work on the Target building is currently expected to begin in February 2027 and continue through January 2028.
Those dates represent the anticipated construction schedule and shouldn’t be treated as a confirmed opening timeline.
Still, after months of plans, land transactions and site preparation, the newest filing represents another significant step forward.
The Target coming to the Dripping Springs area is no longer represented only by an announcement and a site plan.
Now there’s a $19.3 million building behind it.
