Austin Community College is preparing for one of the biggest additions yet to its Hays Campus in Kyle — a new three-story Health Sciences building designed to dramatically expand healthcare training south of Austin.
A new state filing for Building 5000 at 1200 Kohlers Crossing describes a 136,300-square-foot instructional building with an estimated construction cost of $101 million. The plans include classrooms, laboratories, vocational training and instructional spaces, administrative offices and a testing center.
A major expansion for healthcare training in Hays County
The size of the project tells only part of the story. ACC says the new Building 5000 will become the home of its Health Sciences programs in the college district’s South Region and is expected to bring capacity for roughly 1,000 additional students to the Hays Campus.
Programs planned for the expansion include nursing, surgical technology, radiology technology, phlebotomy, emergency medical services, pharmacy technology and other allied health offerings. ACC has also previously identified Dental Hygiene and Sonography among the high-demand programs being expanded through the Hays project.
That makes the project more than another large building going up along the fast-growing I-35 corridor. It is intended to create a much larger pipeline for students in Kyle, Hays County and surrounding communities to train for healthcare careers closer to home.
Part of ACC’s 2022 bond program
The expansion is being funded through ACC’s 2022 General Obligation Bond program. The college previously allocated about $100 million in bond funding to the Hays Campus project, which also includes a new Central Utility Plant along with parking and roadway improvements.
ACC selected HarrisonKornberg Architects to design the expansion and Kitchell Contractors as construction manager at risk. The college has also said the new building is being designed with sustainability in mind, including work toward LEED green-building standards. ACC’s latest project update says the expansion remains on schedule for a fall 2028 opening.
When will Building 5000 open?
The latest state filing lists construction running from October 19, 2026, through August 21, 2028. ACC, meanwhile, has announced a groundbreaking planned for September 2026 and says the expansion remains on track to open for the fall 2028 semester.
For a campus that ACC calls one of its rising stars, Building 5000 will be a substantial next step — adding more than 136,000 square feet while putting a major new center for healthcare education directly in one of Central Texas’ fastest-growing areas.
