Things are about to get a little sweeter at Village at Gateway.
Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is coming to Forney, with a new shop planned for 11430 East US Highway 80, Suite 210. The location will join the growing lineup of restaurants and retailers taking shape at Village at Gateway.
According to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing, crews will transform the space into a new 1,618-square-foot ice cream shop.
The project carries an estimated construction cost of $250,000. Work is currently scheduled to begin October 1, 2026, with completion targeted for December 1.
From One Ohio Ice Cream Stand to a Growing Brand
Handel’s story goes all the way back to 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio.
That’s where Alice Handel began serving ice cream from her husband’s gas station using fruit from her own backyard. What started as one neighborhood ice cream stand eventually grew far beyond Ohio.
Today, Handel’s has locations across the country, including a growing presence here in Texas.
One tradition has remained at the center of the brand: Handel’s makes its ice cream fresh at each location.
Plenty of Flavors to Choose From
Choosing what to order might be the hardest part.
Handel’s offers a large rotating lineup of flavors, ranging from familiar classics to creations packed with candy, cookies, fruit and other mix-ins.
The menu goes beyond a simple scoop, too. Customers can grab cones and dishes, sundaes, shakes and other frozen treats.
So whether you keep things simple with chocolate or vanilla or spend five minutes staring at the flavor board trying to make a decision, there should be plenty to choose from.
Another Addition to Village at Gateway
Handel’s will become another piece of the rapidly growing Village at Gateway development in Forney.
Major retailers including Target, H-E-B, Home Depot and BJ’s Wholesale Club have already opened in the development, while additional restaurants, shops and entertainment options continue to join the lineup.
Texas Construction Media also recently identified a separate construction project for Chipotle at Village at Gateway.
And there’s another addition on our radar. A construction filing shows Eyemart Express preparing a 3,000-square-foot project at the development as well.
