Wren’s Landing is bringing board games, beer, wine, and a new place to spend game night to Leander. Planned for 1561 Hero Way, Suite 120, the neighborhood café and bar has a story that starts with a first date and grows into a family’s love of playing together.
A first date inspired Wren’s Landing
Co-founders Mindy and Charles Carlson trace the name back to Wren’s Café, where they had their first date in 1996. Their relationship began during a family canoeing trip. Decades later, that café’s name is finding a new home in their own business.
On their Wren’s Landing story page, the couple describes raising three children with board games woven into family life. Magic: The Gathering helped teach their son to read. Splendor encouraged problem-solving, while Dixit and Salem made room for creativity and conversation.
Those experiences shaped the idea behind Wren’s Landing: give other people a place to put down their screens and spend time together. The couple describes the venture as a retirement vision built around the connections that happen across a game table.
A game night that welcomes beginners
You do not have to arrive with a tournament résumé. Wren’s Landing’s website describes a space for newcomers, casual players, and dedicated strategy fans alike. Plans include quick party-game visits, longer sessions with friends, and hosted events where guests can meet other players.
A night at Wren’s Landing is easy to picture: bring a group, choose something to play, and give the evening a little friendly competition. A short game can break the ice. A longer one gives everyone a reason to stay at the table.
The registered build-out calls for beer and wine service alongside self-serve packaged food. It does not include a commercial kitchen. The focus is on a social gaming space, with drinks and simple food supporting the time people spend playing.
Where and when is Wren’s Landing opening?
Community Impact reported a December 2026 opening target in August. The state registration lists a September 1 start and December 15, 2026, completion for the renovation. That construction date is separate from a confirmed opening day.
The Wren’s Landing renovation covers 2,984 square feet at an estimated cost of $399,000, including the bar, millwork, restrooms, lighting, and finishes. The Texas accessibility project number is TABS2027000451.
The owners’ build journal reports that they have the keys, have submitted building permits, and have secured funding. It also gives future guests a place to follow the café’s progress toward opening.
