Dumas has plenty of Texas pride. But there’s one thing the Panhandle city has somehow gone without all these years.
A Whataburger.
That’s about to change.
The Texas-born burger chain is preparing to open its first Dumas restaurant at 1200 S. Dumas Avenue, bringing one of the state’s most recognizable orange-and-white brands to the city.
The new restaurant will span approximately 3,305 square feet and will be built from the ground up along Dumas’ main commercial corridor.
From Corpus Christi to Dumas
Whataburger’s story started more than 75 years ago in Corpus Christi.
Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton founded the company in 1950 with an ambitious idea for the time: make a hamburger so large customers needed two hands to hold it.
The goal was to make something that would leave people saying, “What a burger.”
Apparently, the idea worked.
What began as a single burger stand eventually grew far beyond the Texas coast. Today, Whataburger operates more than 1,100 restaurants across multiple states, while its orange-and-white A-frame heritage remains one of the most recognizable pieces of Texas fast-food history.
What’s on the menu?
For anyone who’s somehow managed to avoid a Whataburger run, burgers are only part of the story.
The menu includes Whataburger favorites like the Patty Melt and Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich, along with chicken sandwiches, fries, onion rings and shakes.
Then there’s breakfast.
Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits, Breakfast on a Buns and taquitos have helped turn late-night and early-morning Whataburger runs into something of a Texas tradition.
And yes, Dumas will finally have somewhere local to stock up on Spicy Ketchup.
No more Amarillo run
For Dumas residents, the new restaurant fills a pretty noticeable hole on the local dining map.
Whataburger already has a strong presence throughout Texas and multiple restaurants roughly 45 miles south in Amarillo. Dumas, however, does not currently have a Whataburger of its own.
Once the new location opens, that drive south won’t be necessary just to grab a Whataburger.
Construction is currently expected to begin in September 2026, with the project targeting completion around January 2027. An official opening date has not yet been announced.
But after decades without one, waiting a little longer probably won’t hurt.
Dumas, your first Whataburger is officially on the way.
