Ropesville Texas Construction: Districts, Redevelopment and Projects

On the road from Lubbock to Brownfield, U.S. 62 passes through Ropesville and the cotton country of southeastern Hockley County. The town’s first general store doubled as its post office in 1920. Its first schoolhouse served as a church, too. Within five years, residents had a high school and the first bank organized in Hockley County. A cotton gin gave surrounding growers a reason to bring their crop into town. History of Ropesville.

Some of the most consequential construction around Ropesville took place on farms during the Great Depression. Beginning in 1934, the Ropesville Resettlement Project paired farmland with houses, wells and outbuildings. Photographers visiting in August 1936 documented families at their new homesteads and workers shaping terraces and building an earthen water tank. Those photographs preserve details of how families managed soil and water on the South Plains that are easy to miss from the highway today. See the Ropesville Farms photographs.

Ropes ISD serves a community that extends beyond the city limits. The district reported that enrollment rose from 475 students in 2020 to 670 in 2025. Its facilities plan called for more classrooms at both the elementary and secondary campuses, room for the band program and a later expansion of the agricultural shop. Athletic facilities are another part of the local construction picture, including a proposed new softball field at the existing site. Ropes ISD facilities plan.

For someone bringing a building into Ropesville, one of the first stops is City Hall at 107 Hockley Main Street. The city directs applicants for new construction and buildings moved inside city limits to submit a builder’s permit and a citizen request form for City Council consideration. Its forms page also lists the application for new water service. Together, those records give residents a way to follow how an individual lot goes from a proposal on a meeting agenda to a property served by the city. City forms and permits.
